Just to make you aware there is a 7 week summer break this year for Vale pupils between the end of the Summer Term and the start of the Autumn Term. There are a number of reasons for this as detailed below :-
This academic year started early on Tue 1 Sep 2009
Mon 19 & Tue 20 July 2010 are designated INSET Days
August bank holiday is late this year - Mon 30 Aug 2010
Next academic year starts on Mon 6 Sep 2010.
Our holiday dates were decided on the following basis :-
Teachers' Unions and the LEA favour complete weeks as part weeks adversely affect pupil attendance rates
August bank holiday week is traditionally the last week of the summer holidays and many people are away that week.
The alternative was to start the next academic year in August bank holiday week but this would have been a part week only of 2 or 3 days. For example Cardiff Schools finish this academic year on Monday 19 July 2010 and start next academic year on Thu 2 Sep 2010 which is a designated INSET Day so pupils there return on Fri 3 Sep unless individual schools decide to take an INSET Day on that day.
